Lafayette Legend: Bob Hope
Lafayette Legends: Bob Hope

The great Bob Hope, full name Richard Zoglin Hope, was the first guest to sign our registry on the opening of the hotel in 1946. The Lafayette soon established its reputation as a grand Hollywood hideaway. Many of you know that Mr. Hope was one of the most famous celebrities from the 1930’s all the way up to the end of the century. After his inaugural visit to the hotel, he would lead a cavalcade of some of the world’s biggest stars to the hotel. Some would stay to rest up before a vacation jaunt to Mexico, others would stay during Del Mar racing season.

Describing Bob Hope as “underrated” may sound strange. After all, he remains one of the most recognizable people of the 20th century. However, a new comprehensive biography suggests that few of us fully appreciate Ol' Ski Nose and his significance in American culture.

Among Mr. Hope’s many accolades; he entertained the troops overseas during WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam. In addition, he starred in numerous movies, and hosted 19 Academy Award shows! He would live to the ripe old age of 100. Bob Hope was truly one of a kind. To honor our first guest, we named ‘presidential suite’ after him.
