If Sonoma is known for wine, leave it to San Diego to host some of California’s most exceptional breweries. The North Park neighborhood is home to quite a few acclaimed pubs, breweries and tasting rooms. Visitors to the area can book a tour or simply duck in to some of our favorites to see what’s on tap. Fall Brewing Company, known to the locals by its bright yellow Humpty-Dumpy (falls down) mascot, entered the craft-brew scene in 2014 and quickly made a name for itself in North Park. Co-owner and Brew Master, Ray Astamedi, has perfected a varied line-up which includes multiple IPAs, a frothy coffee bean and vanilla stout named 2AM Bike Ride as well as the California common lager, A Beer Named Sue. Set in a refurbished automotive repair facility, complete with a roll-up garage door, this brewery is on our must-see list. Eppig Brewing Company has been a staple in Brooklyn, NY since 1866 but these days its all about reinvention. When Eppig first opened their location in North Park in 2016, they stormed onto the brew-scene taking four medals at the 2017 San Diego International Beer Competition. Most notably their ABV Schwarzbier has had beer aficionados talking. Mike Hess Brewing Company has been around for a while and is hailed as one of the most premiere craft breweries in San Diego. Using nano brewing technologies, Mike chronicles the process of his start-up on the Mike Hess Odyssey Blog. The knowledgeable staff at the kid and pet-friendly North Park tasting room is open for conversation or to guide you in selecting the choicest beer for your taste buds. For an award-winning seasonal brew, try the 8 West Orange Honey Wheat beer.
