Best of Both Worlds - San Diego is the biggest border town in America - Which might seem an uncomfortable role to fill in these turbulent times. But the city's next generation of lifestyle visionaries are treating their proximity to Mexico as an opportunity, importing their neighbors' culture and cuisine and fusing them with the good vibrations of southern California.
While San Diego and Tijuana are two distinct cities and two distinct nations they function more like a single megalopolis that happens to have an international border running through it.
Both Hundred Proof, which features 41 whiskeys and "boozy shakes" and Bar Pink, mentioned in this piece, are our neighbors and friends. Bar Pink, like the Lafayette, has a vintage vibe, with old films playing behind the bar.
The New San Diego: Lodging - For a touch of eccentricity, try the Lafayette Hotel in trendy North Park; it's pool was designed in 1946 by Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller.
Thank you to Travel +Leisure Magazine for this incredible shout out for the Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows.
