Weissmuller Pool

Friends and neighbors, important information on “Family Swim” can be found here.

Known locally as the pool, the 50-meter masterpiece at the Lafayette is one of the most iconic in Southern California. Ok, ok, it’s not a full 50-meters, but rather 163 feet, 10 inches; two inches shy of an official Olympic pool – a fact San Diego native and athlete Florence Chadwick was quick to point out while training here for her then record breaking swim across the English Channel in 1950.

The 600,000 gallon terrazzo pool sits in the center of the 2.36-acre hotel complex, and is rumored to have been designed by former Tarzan and not so shabby swimmer Johnny Weissmuller in 1946.

After sixty-five years the pool remains the hotel and neighborhood’s star attraction. Over recent years the pool’s popularity has exploded, making it a summertime Mecca for locals and even LA residents looking to unwind.

During summer months (June 1 – September 12) we allow friends and neighbors access to the pool and bar beginning at noon until 6pm.  (Please check here for modified Fall neighborhood pool hours.)  It can get quite busy.  Should a hotel guest be unable to find an open chair, please contact the front desk and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.

Families looking to enjoy the pool are advised to do so prior to noon or after 6pm.

Throughout the year the pool also plays host to special events, DJs, bands, and private celebrations.  Events can be found on the hotel blog or Facebook page.
